A different perspective on downtown can now be seen in new art found in the lobby of The Metropolitan, the gem on the West side of the river in downtown Cedar Rapids that houses residences as well as restaurants Bari and Quinton’s.

In November of 2023, the Board of The Metropolitan wanted to add a bit of interest to the lobby. It is the first impression you get when you walk in the door of the building, they wanted the lobby to reflect its roots in the refurbishment of the west side of downtown Cedar Rapids.

“We are especially happy with the new art in our lobby because it conveys an ‘uptown’ feel about Cedar Rapids and the folks who live in the downtown area,” said the HOA’s president Jim Arenson.

Asked to create art that not only activated the large lobby wall but also captured the outstanding view of downtown from the west side, local artist Bill Bollman’s take on the request is both contemporary and unique.

“For me the interesting part of this opportunity was to make people stop and think about what they may not put a lot of thought into. Downtown is special with its iconic buildings and ever-expanding skyline. We should take the time to appreciate it. Plus, we’re trying to encourage people to come back downtown to live and work. Art can be that catalyst for a change of mindset,” said artist Bill Bollman.

Mr. Bollman said his inspiration comes in the mixture of the old and new architecture that also provides a unique perspective from the west side of the river, known as Kingston Village. The paintings capture the interaction between the sky and buildings as a multifaceted dance of light, color, form, and human creativity. It reflects the character of our city, its history, and the ongoing dialogue between nature and urban development.
